چکیده

Geologists usually deal with rocks that are up to several thousand million years old. They try to reconstruct the tectonic settings where these rocks were formed and the history of events that affected them through the geological time. The spinel group minerals provide useful information regarding the geological environment in which the host rocks were formed. They constitute excellent indicators of geological environments (tectonic settings) and are of invaluable help in the search for mineral deposits of economic interest. The current workflow requires the scientists to work with different applications to analyze spine data. They do use specific diagrams, but these are usually not interactive. The current workflow hinders domain experts to fully exploit the potentials of tediously and expensively collected data. In this paper, we introduce the Spinel Explorer-an interactive visual analysis application for spinel group minerals. The design of the Spinel Explorer and of the newly introduced interactions is a result of a careful study of geologists' tasks. The Spinel Explorer includes most of the diagrams commonly used for analyzing spinel group minerals, including 2D binary plots, ternary plots, and 3D Spinel prism plots. Besides specific plots, conventional information visualization views are also integrated in the Spinel Explorer. All views are interactive and linked. The Spinel Explorer supports conventional statistics commonly used in spinel minerals exploration. The statistics views and different data derivation techniques are fully integrated in the system. Besides the Spinel Explorer as newly proposed interactive exploration system, we also describe the identified analysis tasks, and propose a new workflow. We evaluate the Spinel Explorer using real-life data from two locations in Argentina: the Frontal Cordillera in Central Andes and Patagonia. We describe the new findings of the geologists which would have been much more difficult to achieve using the current workflow only. Very positive feedback from geologists confirms the usefulness of the Spinel Explorer.

Mineralogical and geochemical investigations of chromite ores from ophiolite complexes of SE Iran in terms of chrome spinel composition

Ten chromite ores from ophiolite complexes in SE Iran were analyzed mineralogically by XRD, chemically by XRF, and mineral chemistry by EPMA. The identified paragenesis of silicate minerals of chromite ores with the X-ray diffraction is pronounced differently. It consists of secondary phases formed as serpentine, Cr-containing chlorite (kaemmererite), chromic garnet (uarovite) with preserved pa...

Hydrogen and deuterium diffusion in non-stoichiometric spinel

High pressure/temperature annealing experiments are used to determine diffusivities of H and D in non-stoichiometric spinel, a low-pressure analogue for nominally anhydrous minerals in Earth’s mantle. Data are fitted to the following Arrhenius law: Diffusivity (m/s) = 4 ± 1 × 10 exp(−54 ± 2 kJ mol/RT). At low temperatures, H and D diffusion in non-stoichiometric spinel is charge balanced by flu...

Origin of Asymmetric Symplectitic Texture in Mantle Xenoliths from the Fangshan Basalt, Eastern China

Mantle-derived xenoliths brought to the Earth’s Surface by basalts are important windows to understand composition, evolution and processes of the lithospheric mantle. The lithosphere of the southeastern China is dominated by peridotite or lherzolite [1, 2]. The spinel peridotite xenoliths studied are from Fangshan basalt, eastern China, which are composed of olivine, clinopyroxene, orthopyroxe...

Hidden in Plain Sight : Spinel - Rich Deposits on the Nearside of the Moon as Revealed by Moon Mineralogy

Introduction: Investigation of spectral anomalies in global data acquired with the Moon Mineralogy Mapper (M) [1] has revealed a new, unique, and unexpected spinel-rich lithology on the central nearside. These spinel-rich deposits are found only among the Sinus Aestuum pyroclastic/dark mantle deposits (DMD) and are notably absent from the adjacent Rima Bode DMD. While these deposits are spatial...

Synthesis and Structural Characterization of Nickel Substituted Manganese Zinc Nanoferrites

Magnetic oxides are naturally occurring minerals. In order to understand their unique properties and their utilization in technological applications, one must fully understand the correlation between chemistry, structure, particle size and processing. Among the broad classification of magnetic oxides, the spinel ferrites gain much importance because of their low cost, high magnetic permeability...
